Government Sends Alert Over Blood Glucose Monitoring Tests Calling For Recall

Product liability experts at national law firm Irwin Mitchell call for a thorough investigation to identify patients who use the named glucose strips after the Government Medical Device Regulator (MHRA) recalls medical devices used to monitor blood glucose levels that may give false results.

A medical safety alert has been issued by the MHRA concerning a device that has a risk of false low blood glucose results, which are home used.  

TRUEresult, TRUEresult twist, and TRUEtrack, manufactured by Nipro Diagnostics, may give incorrect low blood glucose results that could lead to undetected hyperglycaemia. The alert refers to different blood glucose test strips to those covered by MDA/2016/009R.

The government alert warns: to identify patients who use the listed devices and advise them to discontinue use, return the strips to the manufacturer for replacement, and ensure that patients are aware of alternative testing means. 

The strips are distributed across the UK from NHS walk-in centres, A&E departments and GP practitioners.

“Glucose monitoring tests are vital to thousands of patients who suffer from diabetes and other hypoglycaemic illnesses. Crucially, if the blood glucose testing is not accurate, patients could be at risk of becoming hypoglycaemic which can lead to very serious health problems.

“Patients using this product need to be identified and urgently advised about alternative methods of monitoring to make sure that they’re obtaining accurate results. If patients are concerned, it is important for them to seek advice from their GP or specialist immediately.

“With the medical devises being used at home by patients, it will take a lot of time and money for the NHS to be certain that all strips are recalled. Patients must be at the centre of immediate care as going with false results can have life threatening consequences.”
