Venue Closes Doors For Construction Work Early Due To Concerns
Legal experts who represent victims of asbestos-related disease have welcomed the decision to close the Bloomsbury Theatre in London for construction work early, after the deadly material was identified in the building.
While the venue was set to close from January to June for major work, the planned closure has been brought forward after asbestos was reportedly disturbed during minor building work this summer.
According to The Stage, the theatre’s owner University College London has brought forward the closure with a view to reopening next summer and work is underway to locate new venues for shows affected.
The decision has been backed by asbestos-related disease lawyers at Irwin Mitchell, who specialise in helping victims affected by mesothelioma and other conditions linked to exposure to the material.

Expert Opinion
“Our work means we have seen first-hand the devastating legacy that asbestos has had on so many lives. With this in mind, the decision to close the Bloomsbury Theatre as a result of concerns regarding the material has to be welcomed.

“While exposure to the material has so often been linked to industrial environments, we have seen more and more instances where people have come into contact with the material in public buildings including schools and hospitals.

“As such, it is vital that the owners of any buildings where asbestos is present always ensure that they are monitoring its presence – with the ultimate aim of ensuring that, like in this case, swift action is taken to reduce risks when it is disturbed.” Ian Bailey - Partner
