The parents of a seven-year-old boy who diagnosed with cerebral palsy are backing a national initiative, World Cerebral Palsy Day, which takes place this year on 7^th October.

Christian Corion, from Sevenoaks, in Kent, has severe whole body dyskentic cerebral palsy and has significant learning difficulties and visual impairment. He also has limited mobility and is fed by a gastrostomy (feeding tube).

He was born on 1^st December 2007 and was discharged from Lewisham hospital fit and well but developed jaundice. His parents took him back to hospital when he was five days old but there was substandard care in his treatment for jaundice, including a delay in giving him phototherapy and exchange transfusion. As a result Christian suffered severe brain damage.

His parents Chris and Kay instructed expert medical negligence lawyers at Irwin Mitchell to investigate his treatment at Lewisham hospital which is run by the Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust.

The NHS trust admitted liability for Christian’s injuries and the family has received an interim payment which has allowed his parents and two brothers to move to a new ground floor house with specialist equipment to help with Christian’s development.

This year Irwin Mitchell is partnering with national charity, Brainwave, on World CP Day to help raise awareness about the condition which affects more than 17 million people around the world.

Brainwave was set up to help children with disabilities to achieve greater independence. They work with families and schools and aim to improve children’s mobility, communication skills and learning potential through educational and physical therapies.
