Conveyancing Expert Comments On Housing Bill
The Government today showed that the residential property market will be a priority for the coming year as the Housing Bill was included in the Queen’s Speech.
The Bill sets out plans to extend the Right to Buy scheme to include housing association tenants as well as council tenants, build 200,000 starter homes for first time buyers and a new self-build initiative to help people who wish to build their own homes.
Expert Opinion
“The proposed Housing Bill is the Government’s attempt to make more affordable housing available. They have announced 200,000 starter homes, a self-build programme and an extension of the Right to Buy scheme.
“For those people in social housing who wish to own the home they have lived in for years, this will be welcome news but it remains to be seen what impact this will have on the housing market as alternative housing or land will need to be sourced to replace the homes lost to the scheme.
“It will also be interesting to see if other measures such as the Help to Buy ISA proposed in the Budget in March will be introduced this year.” Gillian Coverley - National Head of Partnerships, Wills & Probate
