Serious Injury Lawyers Help To Secure Interim Payments For Rehabilitation

A trainee plasterer who was involved in a horrific car crash which left him unconscious and with multiple broken bones has spoken of his relief after serious injury lawyers secured him access to vital rehabilitation funds.

Cale Borland from Glenfield in Leicester was a passenger in his friend’s car. They were travelling down a narrow stretch of road on 30 March 2014 when the driver lost control and crashed into the side of an Indian restaurant. Cale was left unconscious and was rushed to hospital.

Cale was taken to the Major Trauma Unit at Coventry Walsgrave Hospital; he suffered from two broken wrists and severe cuts to his head, face and arms. He needed three operations to repair the damage to his wrist and then had a handful of physiotherapy sessions to help with his recovery but his injuries still caused a great amount of pain.

The 17-year-old instructed expert serious injury lawyers at Irwin Mitchell to investigate his case and he has now received a significant interim payment to help fund his rehabilitation treatment following an admission of liability from the driver’s insurer.

Cale suffered multiple injuries as a result of the car accident which has had a significant impact on his life. He was training at Leicester College to become a plasterer at the time and due to the injuries to his wrists he has struggled to keep up with the practical side of the course. His mum’s business has suffered as she had to take care of him when he got home from the hospital too.

Cale lives with his mum, Lorraine Elkington. Due to his injuries, her cleaning business suffered as she was looking after Cale full time when he came home from hospital.

The trainee plasterer was discharged from Coventry University Hospital in early April and then in August he contacted Irwin Mitchell and he was assessed by a Consultant in Neurological Rehabilitation. Irwin Mitchell is continuing to investigate, on Cale’s behalf, whether he has suffered from a brain injury from being knocked unconscious. He is now experiencing low moods and difficulties with his memory. Irwin Mitchell have instructed a Consultant Clinical Neuropsychologist. 

Cale has also been assessed by a consultant plastic surgeon. He has recommended scar revision surgery and occupational therapy. He has also raised concerns about Cale’s emotional state following the traumatic accident, particularly because of the extensive scarring he now has. 

Cale said: “The past year has been extremely difficult for me to come to terms with what has happened. Thankfully, I don’t remember a lot of the accident itself as I was knocked unconscious, but the extent of my injuries and the impact it has had on both mine and my mum’s lives has been huge.

“However, the interim payment arranged by my legal team at Irwin Mitchell does give me some hope that with further treatment, one day I will be able to succeed and finish my training for the career I am passionate about and regain the quality of life I once had.

“I am looking forward to starting my rehabilitation as I hope it will help me regain my confidence and also recover from my injuries.”
