Around 100 Cases And 12 Deaths Linked To Illness Problems
Specialist lawyers representing victims and families who lost loved ones in major Legionnaires’ outbreaks in Edinburgh and Stoke-on-Trent in 2012 have urged authorities in New York to work quickly to tackle similar illness problems which have hit the city.
At least 12 deaths have been linked to the Legionnaires’ disease problems in the South Bronx area of the city, with reports suggesting the legionella bacteria has been traced to cooling towers in a number of buildings.
It is believed that more than 100 cases of illness have been reported to officials and cleaning crews are working across the area to try and tackle the problems.
Health officials in New York now believe there has not been a new case since August 3rd.
Irwin Mitchell’s specialist Public Health lawyers have vast experience in helping people affected by illness outbreaks across the world to gain answers and vital financial support following such problems.
They notably secured a substantial six-figure settlement for victims of a fatal outbreak of Legionnaires’ disease in Stoke-on-Trent in 2012, while they also are continuing to seek answers for over 30 people affected by similar problems in Edinburgh in the same year.
Expert Opinion
“It has been hugely concerning to see the reports of the problems in New York, with them inevitably bringing to mind the devastating outbreaks in both Edinburgh and Stoke.

“There are strict controls in place which are designed to reduce the risk of Legionella contamination in public spaces.

“There will no doubt be a range of questions raised by the issues in New York and consideration given as to whether more could and should be done to prevent similar problems from emerging again in the future.

“In our experience, we have also seen how incredibly difficult it can be for both the families of victims and those who have died. With this in mind, we would urge authorities in New York to ensure that transparency is a priority and that regular updates continue to be provided on investigations.” Elizabeth Tetzner - Partner
