NHS Greater Glasgow And Clyde Release Update On Cases
An investigation is being held by NHS Greater Glasgow And Clyde (NHSGGC) and other authorities in relation to 11 cases of illness which have been linked to Celtic Park in Glasgow.
The organisation has confirmed it is working with Health Protection Scotland, the Food Standards Agency and Glasgow City Council to examine the issue, with the cases being spread across the Glasgow and Clyde, Lanarkshire and Highland areas.
Nine out of the 11 cases have so far been confirmed as salmonella through laboratory testing, with investigations confirming all of those affected ate at Celtic Park on September 21st this year.
NHSGGC has stated that food production processes within the Celtic Park kitchen were found to be appropriate, so attention has turned to external suppliers of ingredients
Dr Gillian Penrice, lead consultant in public health medicine at NHSGGC, said: “I would stress however that this appears to have been an isolated cluster of cases, that there is no ongoing risk to customers and that we are satisfied with the food handling and hygiene at Celtic Park.”
Expert Opinion
It is very worrying to hear reports of illness linked to Celtic Park and it is vital that NHSGGC and other authorities continue to work to quickly and thoroughly identify the source of the problems, in order to ultimately guarantee no one else will be affected. <br/> <br/>"Our work means we have seen a huge number of cases in which people have suffered severe gastric illness symptoms as a result of issues such as salmonella, with the problems having a significant impact on the short and long term health of victims. <br/> <br/>"With this in mind, the seriousness of these problems should not be underestimated and it is vital that, where possible, everything is done to ensure that the problems here are not repeated in the future."
