Nafees Hamid Has Been Jailed For 16 Years
A neurosurgeon who spent time working at the Queen Elizabeth and Priory Hospitals in Birmingham has been jailed for 16 years after being convicted of sexual offences against vulnerable women in his care.He was found guilty of nine sexual offences against six women committed between 2012 and 2013.
Judge Patrick Thomas QC described the offences Hamid committed as the “most extreme breach of trust”.
He added: "These ladies went to see you because they had significant problems and they thought - with your skills, abilities and experience - you were the person who could help them with the medical problems. Instead you grossly abused them."
A complaint about Hamid’s conduct was made in 2009 and was dealt with by an employee who accepted the neurosurgeon’s explanation, without escalating the complaint and launching an investigation.
A spokesman said: "The trust accepts that by not following proper procedures in dealing with the 2009 complaint, an opportunity was potentially missed to prevent the subsequent offences that occurred. For this, we offer an unreserved apology to Nafees Hamid's victims."
Expert Opinion
This is a truly shocking case and yet another example of an individual in a position of trust abusing this and subjecting those in their care to sexual offences.

“Every effort must be made to determine what went wrong in the past and what can be done to ensure such terrible crimes can be prevented in the future.

“It is vital those who suffered at the hands of Hamid are now given all the help and support they require to assist them in coming to terms with the physical and psychological trauma sexual abuse can cause.” Tom Fletcher - Partner
