West Midlands Law Firm Raises Awareness For Brain Injury Charity Headway

Lawyers at Irwin Mitchell’s West Midlands office are donning hats in support of brain injury charity Headway’s Action for Brain Injury Week, working to raise vital funds for rehabilitation services in the Black Country and Wales.

Action For Brain Injury Week runs from 12 – 18 May and the campaign, organised by Headway, aims to increase awareness of the impact that brain injuries have on people and their families and the vital support services that are available.

Serious injury lawyers Katie Flatman and Sarah Llewelyn Rees from Irwin Mitchell’s Birmingham office are encouraging their colleagues to put on their hats for Headway’s first ‘Hats 4 Headway’ competition on Friday 16th May.

Irwin Mitchell has supported Headway charities for many years and money raised on Friday will be donated to Headway Black Country and Ceredigion branches.

Headway Black Country and Ceredigion are brain injury rehabilitation services which offer a wide range of activities in Dudley, Walsall, Wolverhampton and Wales which are designed to help brain injury survivors relearn lost skills and gain new ones.

Katie Flatman, a serious injury specialist at Irwin Mitchell’s Birmingham office said:  “Head and brain injuries have a dramatic and life-changing impact for the person injured and for those who are close to them.

“Those affected deserve the best possible medical care, rehabilitation and specialised support following a head injury. We hope that through our activity we can support and help to raise awareness about Action For Brain Injury Week to help guide people in the right direction to services they need to help improve life after a brain injury.

“Headway is a fantastic charity and one of which Irwin Mitchell work closely with. They provide an amazing support network for those who have suffered with brain injury and the families of those affect.”

Sarah Llewelyn Rees, who is treasurer for Headway Ceredigion and from Aberystwyth originally will be sending her support to her colleagues from Headway Ceredigion as they man a stall at Bank Square in Aberystwyth and support ‘Hats 4 Headway’ by wearing hats  .

The serious injury expert at Irwin Mitchell added: “The opening of the Headway Ceredigon group last year was the first step towards providing patients in West Wales with consistent rehabilitation and support on their doorstep as previously there were no rehabilitation services available to them. We meet on the first Monday of each month at 2pm at The British Legion Hall in Aberaeron and have brain injury survivors, their families and carers attending the group from all over the county. 

“Unfortunately, this area had been overlooked with many people in West Wales rightly feeling rehabilitation services were a postcode lottery that left most without access to the care they needed.

“We hope all the fund raising activities this week encourage investment in similar other services across West Wales and we wish Headway every success in developing support for the Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) community in West Wales.”
