Consett Woman Continues Legal Battle For Justice Over Problems
A Consett woman who suffered a series of shocking problems after breast implant surgery at a clinic in Newcastle has spoken of her disappointment following a General Medical Council (GMC) ruling on the fitness to practice of the surgeon who carried out the work.
Andrea Scott, 35, suffered serious complications including stitches bursting open and was left needing a series of corrective procedures after the breast augmentation operation undertaken by surgeon Mr Azhar Aslam organised by the city’s Aesthetic Beauty Centre in January 2010.
Following the conclusion of a Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service hearing today (July 1st) in relation to complaints lodged to the General Medical Council by four patients including Mrs Scott, it has been ruled that there is no evidence of impairment on Mr Aslam’s part in relation to Mrs Scott and he is able to continue to practice.
The ruling follows a previous GMC decision, subsequently upheld at the High Court, which saw Dr Ashish Dutta, who arranged and advised on Mrs Scott’s treatment by Mr Azhar, suspended for 12 months.
Irwin Mitchell’s specialist medical negligence team is representing Mrs Scott in her battle for justice from both surgeons in relation to the problems she has endured.
Expert Opinion
Through our work on behalf of Andrea we have heard first-hand of the appalling problems she has endured. As a result, we are understandably disappointed with today’s ruling and the decision to allow this surgeon to continue to practice.
"Anyone who undergoes cosmetic surgery expects procedures to be undertaken in the safest possible manner with high quality ongoing support. Despite today’s decision, we are determined to continue to work to ensure Andrea is able to get the justice she deserves." Angela Kirtley - Partner
Andrea Scott, a care assistant from Consett, said: “The past four years have been the most difficult of my life. I’ve suffered more than physical scars, as the psychological impact of the ordeal has been draining and had a serious impact on my work and other aspects of my life. This has simply been a nightmare.
“Giving evidence at the recent hearings has been a hugely emotional process and this entire issue has simply taken over my life. I’ve been waiting a very long time to see any end in sight.
“Today’s decision is absolutely devastating and my primary concern is that more people will face the same problems that I’ve been through.
“Following this, I remain focused fully on ensuring I get justice and answers over the problems I have endured, as well as a clear indication of what the industry as a whole will do to prevent them ever being repeated again.”
