Irwin Mitchell In Birmingham Joined New Cross Hospital Team In Race
A team of Birmingham lawyers raced on land, water and bikes to take part in the city’s triathlon to raise money for the Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation.Irwin Mitchell solicitors Mark Lennon and Alex Shorey, with trainee Mark Cawley, joined the New Cross Hospital Respiratory Team in the competition on Sunday 20 July.
Dr Angela Morgan and Dr Lee Dowson, who both work as respiratory consultants at New Cross Hospital in Wolverhampton formed part of a 19-strong team from the hospital who competed at the event. The New Cross team was made up of nursing and medical staff, as well as other healthcare professionals, all of whom care for patients diagnosed with lung cancer.
The group has smashed their fundraising target, and after setting themselves an initial goal of £2,000. The current total stands at more than £5,300.
Irwin Mitchell in Birmingham has a close relationship with New Cross Hospital, which supports both patients and their families when they investigate, diagnose and treat patients with lung cancer.
The team competed over varying distance including the ‘Sprint Triathlon’ – a 750m swim, 20km cycle and 5km run, and the ‘Super Sprint Triathlon – 200m swim, 10km cycle and 2.5km run.
Mark Lennon, is a Workplace Illness specialist at Irwin Mitchell’s Birmingham office.
Dr Morgan, who is the clinical lead for lung cancer at New Cross Hospital, said: “Looking after patients with lung cancer is complex and requires a multidisciplinary team approach. At New Cross Hospital, we have a fantastic team of professionals who work together to offer patients the best care possible, it seems very natural that they are also willing to commit time and energy to fundraising for such a worthy cause.”The Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation is the only UK charity dedicated to lung cancer. The charity supports patients and their relatives, as well as providing printed literature and funding research. Lung cancer remains the second most common cancer diagnosed in both men and women, but often is only diagnosed at a late stage making it difficult to treat successfully.
