Scientists Assessing New Approach To Tackling Asbestos-Related Cancer
Medical experts have launched a new trial related to a treatment designed to tackle the asbestos-related cancer pleural mesothelioma, according to reports.
The Herald reports that eight trial sites are being established in the UK to consider how cancer stem cells can be targeted within those diagnosed with the terminal illness, which is caused by exposure to asbestos.
The studies being undertaken on these shores are part of a wider piece of research involving eleven countries.
Although asbestos exposure has been historically linked to work in industrial environments, there are a growing number of people coming into contact with the deadly material in public buildings including hospitals, schools and council sites.
Expert Opinion
Through our day-to-day work, we see the huge consequences that asbestos exposure has on both victims who have developed conditions such as mesothelioma and the families affected by the heartache of seeing a loved one’s health deteriorate. <br/> <br/>"In addition, this is impacting on people from all walks of life, whether it is industrial workers, those who have come into contact with the material in schools or hospitals, and family members exposed simply during the process of washing a loved one’s work clothes. <br/> <br/>"The most tragic aspect is that so many people go on to develop mesothelioma through no fault of their own, simply as a result of health and safety failings by employers. <br/> <br/>"Due to this, any work designed to improve the treatments available to tackle mesothelioma must be welcomed. We will be watching this research closely and hope to see positive results as soon as possible."
