Brain Injury Victim Raises Funds For SoLo
An amateur photographer seriously injured in a road traffic accident nine years ago has raised over £1,000 for charity Solihull Life Opportunities (SoLo), with support from national law firm Irwin Mitchell.
Having suffered a severe brain injury after he was hit by a stolen car while crossing the road in 2005, Steve Rogers spent more than a year in and out of hospital while he underwent intensive speech therapy, physiotherapy and occupational therapy. During his long recovery he chose to enroll in a photography course at Solihull College, wanting to learn something new. This took 4 years, part-time, to complete and he had excellent support from the College.
After finishing the course Steve began volunteering for SoLo, a charity that provides opportunities, activities and experiences for people with learning disabilities.
When he decided that he wanted to raise some funds for SoLo, Steve’s speech and language therapist put him in contact with serious injury experts at Irwin Mitchell who supported the production of a calendar featuring atmospheric night-time cityscapes of Birmingham taken by the photography enthusiast.
The calendar sold out around a month after going to print in November 2013, raising £1,120.
Expert Opinion
Steve's story is hugely inspiring and he is an incredible example of someone who has suffered a devastating injury but, through rehabilitation and support, has been able to go on to help others.
"We were more than happy to help with the production of the calendar and were delighted to see it become a great success, raising vital funds for a great cause in the process." Hilary Wetherell - Partner
