FOI Requests Highlight Concerns Over A Number Of Sites Across UK
A new investigation based on a series of Freedom of Information requests has raised serious concerns over hygiene standards in a number of kitchens in hospitals across the UK.
The study by MailOnline analysed more than 750 environmental health inspection reports from hospitals and found that 581 are believed to be failing to meet their responsibilities when it comes to hygiene.
Around a third were thought to not be meeting cleaning standards, while around 60 were also found to be stocking food which was out of date.
Specific issues reported in relation to hospitals included a serious cockroach infestation at Queen Mary’s Hospital in Sidcup, as well as mice droppings identified in London sites including Mile End Hospital and Whipps Cross University Hospital.
Speaking to MailOnline, Patient Concern co-director Roger Goss said that the study made “a mockery of the mantra that patient safety is paramount on the NHS”.
Expert Opinion
Very clear concerns have been raised in this research and we hope that the NHS acts quickly and thoroughly in addressing the issues.

“Food hygiene is a hugely important issue and we have seen first-hand in numerous cases in the UK and abroad how illness problems caused as a result of safety failings can have a long-term impact on the health of victims.

“Patients and the families of those being treated in hospital expect the welfare and safety of those in hospital to be a top priority, so basic failings of this nature are very worrying.

“This research must lead to a clear change in approach to this area and we hope that improvements will be seen over the coming months.” Suki Chhokar - Partner
