Debbie Brewer ‘A Great Inspiration To Many’
By Rob Dixon
Lawyers who represent victims of asbestos-related disease and the families of those who have died as a result of such conditions have paid tribute to campaigner Debbie Brewer, who passed away earlier this week.
Mrs Brewer, from Plymouth, was diagnosed with mesothelioma seven years ago and believed she was exposed to asbestos as a result of contact with her father, who worked at Devonport Dockyard when she was growing up. Philip Northmore died of the same disease in 2006, a few weeks before his daughter fell ill.
Following her diagnosis, Debbie committed herself to raising awareness and campaigning in relation to mesothelioma and the impact that exposure to asbestos has on so many lives.
Among her efforts was the launch of a popular website and blog called Mesothelioma and Me, which was read by asbestos sufferers and campaigners across the globe.
Adrian Budgen, national head of asbestos litigation at Irwin Mitchell, met Mrs Brewer on numerous occasions as a result of her tireless campaigning to raise awareness of the dangers of exposure to the deadly material.
Paying tribute to her, he said: “Debbie was an amazing person and a great inspiration.
“I heard Debbie speak on a number of occasions and was always impressed by her courage and humility, as well as her zest for life. She will be sorely missed by the mesothelioma community.
“She was a remarkable woman and will be greatly missed.”
