Call For Professionals To Carry Out Work

A dental negligence expert at Irwin Mitchell has welcomed the General Dental Council’s (GDC’s) calls for restrictions to be put in place to ensure only qualified professionals are able to carry out teeth whitening.

In a study by the GDC, which was reported by BBC 5 Live, it was revealed that eight out of ten adults believe whitening should be carried out by registered and trained members of staff.

However, the issue is widely regarded as a cosmetic and not dental issue, which means that the practice can be carried out by those without proper experience in dentistry. The GDC has claimed it has received a number of complaints about poor treatment in relation to the area.

Jennifer Emerson, a solicitor and member of the team at Irwin Mitchell’s Birmingham office, said: “The fact that the leading body in the dental sector has chosen to speak out on this issue demonstrates just how much of a concern this issue has become.

“Anyone who decides to have their teeth whitened deserves to know that their safety and wellbeing is a top priority for those undertaking the procedure.

“The revelations from the GDC suggest that in some cases this simply may not be the case. It is vital that clarification in the law is provided as soon as possible, while it is also important for full and proper training to be given to those who perform such treatments.”
