Man Killed in Steel Girder Accident

The director of a South Yorkshire steel firm has died after he was hit on the head by a one tonne girder whilst unloading it from a truck in Sheffield city centre.

Anthony Baines, 50, the director of Rotherham based Birkhull Engineering, was one of three workers delivering three girders to Fountain Precinct for use in refurbishment works.

Whilst they were unloading the girder from a small truck, which had not been fitted with a crane, the beam fell onto Mr Baines head killing him instantly.

Although paramedics arrived at the scene within minutes they were unable to save him, as passers by looked on horrified at what was happening around them.

South Yorkshire Police taped off the scene of the incident, and are now launching a joint investigation with the Health and Safety Executive into how the accident occurred.

David Urpeth, Partner and Head of Workplace Injuries at Irwin Mitchell said: "This was a shocking fatal accident at work. Whilst the circumstance of this work accident are still under investigation, something clearly went very wrong."
