Manchester Mesothelioma Study Day

On 13 March 2008 the Manchester office asbestos team hosted the second Manchester Mesothelioma Study Day at the Bridgewater Hall in conjunction with the British Thoracic Oncology Group and Mesothelioma UK.  Over 150 delegates participated in the event for healthcare professionals and support workers in the field of mesothelioma (asbestos related cancer).

Delegates heard lectures from a range of specialist medical professionals. Local palliative care consultant Dr Paul Cook spoke about the launch of a new pain relief procedure called cordotomy in the North West for mesothelioma sufferers. The chair Professor Tom Treasure emphasised the need for the 2,000 mesothelioma sufferers diagnosed every year to be supported by those with expertise in mesothelioma.  Nurse Consultant, Liz Darlison, outlined how specialist nurses can support mesothelioma patients.

Michael Lees, who lost his wife Gina to mesothelioma, presented his research on the risks of asbestos in schools and the need for action.  HM Coroner for the City of Manchester, Mr Nigel Meadows, explained the role of the coroner following mesothelioma deaths.
