Clinical negligence compensation

The wife of former Scotland captain Colin Hendry has won a six-figure clinical negligence compensation settlement after botched cosmetic surgery in 2002 almost killed her.

After a liposuction procedure at the private Broughton Park Hospital near Preston Denise Hendry was in intensive care for nearly two months. Mrs Hendry, 40, suffered nine punctures to her colon and bowel, causing septicaemia (blood poisoning) and multiple organ failure.

She had been awarded a settlement; the exact figure has not been disclosed.

The operation was carried out by cosmetic surgeon Dr Gustaf Aniansson, but two days after the procedure Mrs Hendry required treatment for septicaemia at the Royal Preston Hospital after falling.

Ex-Blackburn Rovers defender Colin Hendry kept a bedside vigil at the hospital. The mother-of-four recovered from her injuries, which included a cardiac arrest which stopped her heart for four minutes, and pursued a damages claim against Dr Aniansson.

Dr Aniansson who no longer works in the UK, applied for voluntary erasure from the General Medical Council's register. However he is still free to operate abroad.
