Neck injury compensation
A man whose life was wrecked after he was hit by a sun lounger which was blown off a pub roof has been awarded £1m compensation in the High Court.
John MacMaster was standing outside The Crown in London Road, Romford, Essex, when the freak accident occurred in October 2002.
He was knocked to the ground after the chair struck him on the back of the neck.
He suffered a severe neck injury which triggered a depressive psychosis, leaving him extremely paranoid and highly suspicious of anyone with whom he came into contact, Mr Justice Openshaw heard in London.
The judge approved the compensation award against the pub owners, The Royal Antediluvian Order of Buffaloes.
The court was told that Mr MacMaster, 37, of Romford, had been forced to abandon his successful business of delivering and repairing wooden pallets.
The money will be invested on Mr MacMaster's behalf and lawyers said it was hoped that, after treatment for his psychosis, he would be able to manage his affairs and return to work.
