• A bacterial infection caused by consumption of infected foods.

• Incubation period is 12 hours – 3 days.

• Symptoms include bloody diarrhoea, vomiting, abdominal pain, dehydration and weight loss.

• Can lead to long term symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.

• The commonest way to catch Shigella is to eat food or drink water that has become contaminated with human or animal sewage in some way.
