• Caused by a parasitic protozoa (single celled animal) called giardia lamblia.
  • Incubation period is 5 - 25 days.
  • Symptoms include diarrhoea, abdominal pain, dehydration and weight loss.
  • Some infected people display no symptoms.
  • Can lead to long term symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.
  • The commonest way to catch Giardia is to eat food or drink water that has become contaminated with human or animal sewage in some way.
