Held in Manchester on 30 September - 1 October 2015, the sixth bi-annual BIRT Conference was a ‘must attend’ event for professionals working in the field of brain injury. Thought-provoking and inspiring plenary sessions were delivered by world renowned speakers, including Professor Mark Solms who discussed neuropsychology, and Professor Skye McDonald who addressed the issue of social cognition following severe traumatic brain injury.

In workshop sessions, practitioners shared research strategies and thoughts on recent developments in brain injury rehabilitation. Topics ranged from alcohol related brain damage, assistive technology and rehabilitation in multicultural settings, to supporting the most vulnerable people with brain injuries.

Deirdre Healy, Consultant at the Manchester office of Irwin Mitchell who was recently named joint winner of the UKABIF Lawyer of the Year Award, presented a session on the Design for Life initiative, covering advances in effective treatments to support people with activities in daily living.

Comedian, actress and writer Francesca Martinez entertained guests at the Gala Dinner Evening with her unique insights on society’s approach to disability.

The new BIRT Guide to Living for adults with brain injury, with a legal section sponsored by Irwin Mitchell, was also launched at the conference. For further information please visit: http://www.thedtgroup.org/brain-injury/information-and-support/the-birt-guide-to-living/
