Handling Psychological Injury At Work Claims With Expertise And Sensitivity

Accidents in the workplace can cause more than physical injury. It’s quite common for people to suffer psychological injury too.

If you think that you may have been psychologically affected or you’ve already been diagnosed with a recognised psychological condition resulting from an accident at work, contact Irwin Mitchell today. We are specialists in handling claims which result from a psychological injury at work, and can help you make a mental illness claim.

Common causes of psychological injury at work include the following:

  • Being involved in a distressing accident
  • Enforced absence from work, either temporarily or permanently
  • Pressure from employers
  • Enforced career change
  • Loss of earnings and financial stability
  • Radical changes in family and personal life
  • Physical scarring and body image issues (see our page on scarring injuries)

The effects of a traumatic event at work may include conditions such as:

  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder

Even although our team deals with psychological injury cases every day, we never forget how distressing it can be for you to manage after an accident and help you find your way through the practical demands of the legal process. We’ll give you all the support you need.

Alongside representing you during the whole process of your psychological or mental illness claim, we’ll do everything we can to help you recover quickly too. We can often assist by helping you gain access to the right medical treatment for you.

This can sometimes be paid for by the defendant’s insurer. Otherwise, we’ll aim to get you an interim payment in advance of the final damages awarded or liaise with your GP to help you access NHS treatment.

Accident at Work Leads to Psychological Injury and Compensation

A man has received £3000 compensation after an accident at work led to psychological injury.

Our client was employed as a housekeeping assistant at a hospital.

He was in the process of cleaning one of the clinics when he pricked his finger on what he thought was a plastic cap. However, when he looked closer he discovered it was a discarded needle.

He became worried about the effect of the injury and whether or not he may have caught any infection. Due to this stress, he subsequently developed a major depressive psychological episode which lasted approximately four months.

Our client's claim was settled with help from Lynne Parker of Irwin Mitchell’s Accidents at Work Team.
