Handling Claims For Slips And Trips With Expertise And Sensitivity

Irwin Mitchell is one of the UK’s leading legal groups for slip and trip claims at work.

Many people who trip up or slip at work are uncertain whether they could make a personal injury or compensation claim, perhaps feeling that it must have been their own fault for not looking where they were going.

But the legal system makes allowances for the fact that, in the real world, workers frequently injure themselves by tripping over obstructions left in inappropriate places, or slipping on spillages which have not been mopped up. This may be because a worker has been concentrating on their job rather than where they are walking.

Here are examples of slip and trip compensation claims that are often successful:

  • Failure to repair or warn of a tripping hazard (e.g. a raised carpet tile or hole in the floor)
  • Failure to light an area adequately
  • Failure to use a suitable flooring material in the workplace
  • Failure to provide handrails or other safety measures on stairs

There are laws which place obligations on employers and owners of premises to protect you from slips and trips. In cases where this obligation may not have been met, you could be entitled to make a claim for compensation.

The main regulations that protect workers in this area are The Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992 and The Work at Height Regulations 2005.

Irwin Mitchell has a team of specialist personal injury solicitors who can help you with your trip injury or slip injury claim. If you do suffer an accident at work, contact us as straight away.

NHS Health Care Assistant Receives £100,000 Compensation Following Fall At Work

Irwin Mitchell Solicitors has secured £100,000 in compensation for an NHS Health Care Assistant who was injured at work. Our client, Amy, was working for a hospital in the Midlands when she slipped on the ward and sustained serious injuries to her knee.

Amy’s injuries were so severe that it has taken considerable determination over a number of years, for her to finally regain her independence and return to work on a part-time basis.  However, the severity of the injuries meant her future was not secure.

Serious Injury Solicitor Ann Houghton from our team in the Birmingham, who represented Amy’s case, commented “Amy has been fully committed to her recovery however, the reality is that she may require further surgery in the future and need more assistance. This award included compensation for lost earnings during her recovery period, money for the care and assistance provided to her by her husband and future loss of earnings, amongst other things. It will allow her to pursue further remedial surgery and provide her and her family with security and peace of mind about the future.”

Amy said “I do not know what I would have done without the advice and support from Ann during the past years.  She was always at the end of the phone for me whether I was up or down.  Without Ann I would have given up before now but she made me realise there was a case and why I should carry on.  Thank you.”
