Whilst the public may use the term RSI to describe any injury to the upper limb caused by repeated stress at work, when a doctor diagnoses RSI it can often be because they don’t know the exact cause of your symptoms.

Common symptoms of repetitive strain injury include:

Employee Secures Compensation For Repetitive Strain Injury

Satinder Bains from Irwin Mitchell’s Birmingham office has successfully concluded a claim for a client diagnosed with bilateral tennis elbow. The client, who was also suffering from repetitive strain injury in both wrists, has received £5,000 in compensation.

Mr M, aged 42 from Wolverhampton, worked as a Casting Cleaner in a factory which was involved in the cleaning of castings for industry, domestic and military use. The work required our client to use particular machinery to clean out the aluminium castings for engine parts. The work was forceful, repetitive and required machining heavy aluminium castings. The work would require our client to hold the component against the pressure of the water and air, making the working position particularly uncomfortable.

Mr M’s work was not rotated, nor was he allowed adequate breaks. He had little training for his job and no information about the possibility of developing any kind of repetitive strain injuries.

Mr M, who has undergone extensive treatment to relieve his symptoms, commented: “the company provided no medical assessments to their employees and would not rotate my work so that I was not constantly performing physical and repetitive work.” 

Mr M’s award was secured by Industrial Disease specialist Satinder Bains of the Workplace Illness team at the Birmingham office of Irwin Mitchell.

Commenting on the award, Satinder Bains said: “A repetitive strain injury such as tennis elbow can be a particularly painful condition. Such an injury is particularly prevalent in employees who perform forceful and repetitive work involving strong gripping forces and hand and wrist movements. 

“This case highlights the importance of health and safety policies. Employers have a duty of care to their staff, which includes ensuring that where the work is repetitive and/or involves forceful movements a full risk assessment is carried out, proper training provided, the work should be rotated and work periods involving a lot of repetition should be broken up with short frequent breaks. With proper precautions Mr M’s injury could have been avoided.

“We are currently seeing a lot of these complex repetitive strain injury cases which, in order to be successfully pursued, require a great deal of specialist knowledge and expertise.”
