Small single engine aircraft accidents occur almost every day somewhere around the world. As each accident involves far fewer injuries or fatalities than an airliner accident, they are not as widely reported in the press, meaning there is not the same awareness of the number of accidents and the safety issues that surround them.

Flight in a single engine aircraft carries more risk as the loss of the engine means that the aircraft will have to make a forced landing, most probably when out of gliding range of the runway.  If there is an engine failure, or another fault with the aircraft that causes an accident, we may be able to help you make a claim against the manufacturer.  Irwin Mitchell Aviation Law has experience in light aircraft product liability cases in the US and around the world.

Light Aircraft Crashes On Holiday

A lot of light aircraft flights (and accidents) occur in the African continent and South America, often carrying tourists on sight-seeing or safari flights. The flights often use old or poorly maintained aircraft and the crew may not have the experience and training that we would expect here in the UK.

These poor flight safety issues are compounded by the fact that there is no flight data recorder and the quality of the accident investigation may be very poor.  Irwin Mitchell Aviation Law has significant experience in representing the victims and families involved in light aircraft tourist crashes.  By using the in-house aviation expertise in the operation of small piston engine aircraft, the team analyses the accident to independently determine causes, who was to blame and improve flight safety.

The legal case can be particularly challenging as the claim may need to be brought in a developing country and under their laws. The operator’s insurance coverage may also be very limited.  Irwin Mitchell will explore all options to ensure that your claim has the best chance of success, including seeking to make your claim in the UK or another more developed country where possible. The Aviation Team has significant experience in acting in light aircraft cases and achieving good results for the families and victims.

In addition to the above tourist and safari accidents, Irwin Mitchell also has significant experience in representing the victims of light aircraft accidents in the UK and EU.

Since we started our aviation practice in the 1980s, we have represented many passengers and their families following aviation accidents around the world.

For all of our clients, whether they have suffered serious injury or for the families of those fatally injured, we have provided expert guidance and support.

In the aftermath of an aviation accident, victims and their families often face coming to terms with life-changing events, as well as a hugely complicated technical and legal arena of air accident investigations and aviation law.

In these difficult times our clients have needed help from a specialist aviation law practice that can handle claims on their behalf against the financial might of the airlines, manufacturers and aviation insurers.

We have used our expertise and experience to help hundreds of clients obtain justice and hold those liable to account, to obtain answers on the causes of the accident and to improve flight safety.

Flight safety has been directly improved through increased public awareness and pressure on the airlines and manufacturers. These companies have also been encouraged to improve their practices and procedures as a result of the significant compensation awards that we have achieved for our clients.

Money can never fully compensate victims of air accidents for what they have been through. But financial settlements won for our clients over the last four decades have assisted the victims and their families to move on and rebuild their lives. People who have been severely disabled by their injuries have been able to fund the purchase of appropriate accommodation, equipment and care to cater for their specialised needs. People who have lost a loved one who earned income for the family have been able to put their financial worries behind them and move into a more secure future.

"This is a letter to record our sincere thanks to you and your team for all the help and support you have given us. Without it I do not know how we would have been able to cope. I do not have to tell you how distressing a time it has been, but when I described you elsewhere as a rock that we have been able to lean on and sometimes very heavily, I really meant it."

Robert Dicketts (RAF Nimrod Air Accident 2006)
