Expertise And Understanding From Irwin Mitchell

Horse-riding and working with horses is an extremely popular pastime but they are not without their risks.

However, numerous parties are potentially liable for ensuring our safety around horses. When this protection is missing or flawed, the results of a horse riding accident can be devastating.

At Irwin Mitchell we fight fearlessly to achieve the best outcome for your horse-related accident claim. We’re renowned for our understanding of the issues affecting you and your family due to a riding or horse-related injury, and we know what positive action to take to make a difference.

Our lawyers offer the highest level of professionalism and expertise, combined with dedication and sensitivity.

Above all, we put you first.

Handling Horse Riding Accident Cases With Expertise And Sensitivity

Being involved in a horse riding accident can lead to serious injury. If you are involved in an accident whilst riding or handling a horse, the owner may be liable to pay you compensation for the injuries sustained.

Irwin Mitchell could help you make a claim for any injuries that you have suffered. We commonly deal with a range of horse riding accident claims, including:

  • Road traffic accidents

If you ride or lead horses along roads, you have to comply with the Highway Code and ensure that you act responsibly to other road users.  Other road users also have duties to ensure that they take care whilst passing or approaching horses and ponies.  If you and your horse are involved in a road traffic accident and have been injured it may be possible to pursue a claim to recover compensation for the injury you have sustained, to recover your out of pocket expenses and the cost of medical and vet bills.

  • Accidents at work

If you are employed or do voluntary work involving horses, for example at riding schools, stud farms, racing stables, competition centres, livery yards or trekking centres, your employer has a duty to ensure that you are safe whilst working at the premises and minimise the risk of horse-related accidents.  These duties apply to all employees, not just individuals employed in the equine industry. If you have been injured whilst at work or volunteering, you should seek specialist legal advice as soon as possible if you wish to pursue a claim.

  • Accidents at competitions

The owners of the venue and also the organiser (the two may not be the same) have responsibilities and duties to competitors, spectators and other individuals at the venue.  If you have been injured whilst competing or attending an event, you should seek legal advice if you wish to pursue a horse riding accident claim.

We can investigate your claim and determine whether you may able to receive compensation for your injuries. We can provide professional help and expertise to help make your claim as simple and stress-free as possible..

Proven Expertise In Horse Riding Injury Claims

The law surrounding accidents involving horses is complex and you need to ensure that you obtain specialist advice and that your legal advisor has knowledge of horses.  We have legal advisors who have many years of experience of owning and competing horses and appreciate the difficulties which you can face following accidents involving horses.

Vital Compensation Awarded To A Horse Rider Who Fell After Her Horse Was Spooked

Our client fell from her horse while riding when her horse was spooked by someone moving equipment outside of the arena.

In the fall our client sustained ligament and nerve damage as well as three fractures to her spine. She had to undergo a bone graft and was required to have metalwork inserted to stabilise the fractures. Although her mobility was unaffected in the incident, she has been told that the ongoing pain she experiences will be permanent and has been forced to take pain killers every day.

Following the fall, the lady contacted solicitors at Irwin Mitchell’s Leeds office. Cathryn Godfrey, a serious injury expert in the equine team, spoke of the ways in which compensation has helped our client to deal with her ongoing symptoms: “everyone involved with horses appreciates that it is a risk sport and accidents happen. However, in circumstances where injuries are sustained as a consequence of someone else's actions, which means that the injuries are not sustained as a direct risk associated with the sport, the individual is entitled to pursue a claim.

"As a consequence of the successful claim, my client has been able to obtain funds for treatment to assist with controlling the daily level of pain that she experiences, which was unlikely to have been available on the NHS in the longer term. My client is already benefiting from the additional treatment and it is assisting in controlling the levels of pain that she experiences which improves her quality of life".
