Compensation for Young Worker After Accident at Work

Our young client suffered a devastating accident at work when he was just 16 years old.

He had been working as a box maker before intending to start college in the autumn. He was supposed to only be doing basic tasks, but because the factory was busy he was asked to cut cardboard sheets on a machine. As our client fed the cardboard into the machine it grabbed his fingers and pulled them into the machine. This young man had three of his fingers severed which has severely impacted on his future. During his recovery his independence was severely compromised and affected his confidence. He is no longer able to pursue the engineering course he intended at college.

Our client was not provided with proper training and was encouraged to prevent wasting any cardboard. The machine did not have a guard and our client was not provided with any personal protective equipment.

Sally Rissbrook of Irwin Mitchell’s specialist Accident’s at Work Team said, “This case illustrates the importance of training, especially for young workers like our client. It is vitally important that productivity is not allowed to override the importance of safety in the workplace.”

Irwin Mitchell was able to recover substantial damages for our client to compensate him for his injuries and the opportunities he has lost as a result of this devastating accident.
