Taser Gun Injury Compensation Claims
Since 2003, UK police have been allowed to carry Taser guns to aid them in their duties. At first they were only allowed to use them if they were faced with an armed attacker, but since 2007, they have been allowed to use them if faced with serious violence or threat of violence.
That has sometimes meant that Taser guns have been used against people involved in protests (e.g. environmental protestors, hunt saboteurs and animal rights campaigners) as well as against people said to be resisting arrest. Taser gun use is fairly common with Home Office figures showing that between April 2004 and September 2009, they were used more than 6,000 times.
Problems With Taser Use
Most incidents when Tasers have been used by the police have not caused any lasting damage. Taser guns are considered ‘safe’ to use, but sometimes police officers can make mistakes and use more than ‘fair force’.
Taser gun injuries can cause real physical and psychological harm. They can set fire to flammable substances, trigger heart attacks or breathing problems in people with underlying heart problems or who have taken illegal drugs. Repeated shocks or shocks that last too long, coupled with the use of restraints (like handcuffs) can also cause major harm.
If you have suffered any harm or injury as a result of a Taser gun used inappropriately, you may be able to claim compensation against the police for your injuries or distress.
