This year we’re celebrating the 25th anniversary of our Court of Protection department, originally established in 1990. As the country’s largest, most experienced Court of Protection specialists, we’re proud of our past and focussed on our future.
Our team began with one person and two clients but has since grown and expanded to today’s department, where we act as professional property and affairs deputy for more than 1,000 clients particularly in complex and high value cases.

Meeting Our Clients' Needs
We currently spend over £200 million every year to meet our clients’ complex needs, making their funds go further by using our purchasing power. Our clients often require major building work, and we’ve undertaken more than 100 building projects between 2013 and 2015, totalling many millions of pounds. We have added an experienced building surveyor to our team who acts as our in-house advisor and oversees building-related activity, covering suitability assessments and risk reviews.
Our Court of Protection experts recognise the important role that welfare benefits play in our clients’ lives. We have a dedicated benefits team who have extensive knowledge of reviewing welfare entitlements and appealing against the adverse decisions that impact our clients.
Julia Lomas heads the Court of Protection team. In 2014 she was described by Chambers and Partners, an independent legal guide, as a “real force of nature” and the “deputy of deputies.” Julia has given evidence to the House of Lords Select Committee on the Mental Capacity Act 2005, helping them to consider access to justice for vulnerable individuals.
A Cross-Discipline Approach
The department benefits from being a specialist team within a full service law firm. Our cross-discipline approach means that clients and their families have access to the best possible support and personalised advice.

Jaxx is one of our Court of Protection clients. In 2010 she was hit by a bus and suffered serious head injuries. Our personal injury solicitors secured compensation and a vital care package to support Jaxx’s rehabilitation, while the Court of Protection team helped manage her financial and property affairs. She’s since made a remarkable recovery, learning to walk and talk again.
Five years after her accident she’s regained her capacity to manage her own financial affairs, and we applied successfully to the Court for Jaxx to be discharged.
You can learn more about Jaxx’s amazing story in the YouTube video below.
