Chambers Leading Individual About My Role

I have been the head of clinical negligence at the Leeds office since 1995 acting for patients in claims against doctors and hospitals. I am particularly interested in mistakes made surrounding the delivery of unborn babies causing injury sometimes serious to the baby or their mother, complications of abdominal surgery and late diagnosis of cancer. The department in Leeds covers all aspects of clinical negligence.

Rachelle has "empathy and desire to get the best for her clients, and the "ability to handle high-level, complex work quickly and efficiently."
Chambers and Partners Directory 2011/12

"Irwin Mitchell LLP’s clinical negligence team is a major force nationally. Rachelle Mahapatra is the leading individual in Leeds, and is 'exceptional, with the support of a great team'. Mahapatra has won numerous multimillion-pound awards for clients with cerebral palsy."
Association of Personal Injury Lawyers - senior litigator Legal 500

"This clinical negligence powerhouse covers the Yorkshire region from offices in Leeds and Sheffield. With three partners split between the two offices, the team undertakes a wide variety of claims. The "very client-oriented" Rachelle Mahapatra heads the medical law and patient rights group in Leeds. She commands a high degree of respect for her work in the area, which has included obtaining significant settlements on behalf of adult sufferers of cerebral palsy."

More About Me

What Inspired You To Get Into Law?

Brian Hogan the then head of the legal faculty at Leeds University was a family friend and told interesting stories about criminal law. I originally intended to be a criminal solicitor but was luck enough to work with a specialist clinical negligence solicitor during my training and the rest is history.

What Is The Most Rewarding Aspect Of Your Role?

Enabling people to get as much out of their lives after devastating injuries whether by equipment, care, computers so that they can have control of their own lives.

What Do You Like About Working At Irwin Mitchell?

The people are really passionate about what we do and working with people who want to do the best for their clients.

What Do You Do Away From The Office?

Ride my horse Brookie who lives next to the very beautiful Harewood estate. It is a great way to wind down. I am also a trustee of the Dogs Trust the largest Canine Welfare charity in the UK which takes up a lot of my spare time.
