Paul is an expert in criminal defence law and large scale investigations, representing many individuals accused of serious crimes.
He is instructed in financial crime, fraud and regulatory investigations with experience in defending large and complex criminal or regulatory investigations or prosecutions by bodies such as the SFO, FSA, HMRC and RCPO, BIS, CPS or FPS, SOCA and SRA.
In addition to financial investigations Paul has extensive experience of general crime.
In the fraud sphere Paul’s experience includes defending in the following cases:
- The SFO prosecution of a Football League Chairman for using the company and its assets for his improper purposes (plus the further prosecution of the same Chairman by the CPS for various counts including conspiracy to defraud).
- The Mercury R v B & Others – a large scale drugs and cigarette importation case prosecuted by HMRC which involved a former SAS officer who acted on behalf of MI5 and then when abroad with the CIA. Substantial PII issues arose.
- The SFO prosecution of a Director of Barnsley College Trust with the indictment period spanning in excess of 10 years.
