Tom Gauterin

Senior Associate

I deal with personal tax and trust matters of all shapes and sizes, with a particular focus on clients whose affairs have an international dimension. They may be moving to the UK from abroad, setting up or investing in a business here, planning to buy a property (whether to live in or as an investment) or simply need some help in understanding their UK tax position and organising their affairs.

This can be anything from working out when to move to the UK to undertaking a full restructuring of their family business with a view to getting children involved before the founder retires. For UK clients, my work tends to cover all aspects of estate planning, as well as advising entrepreneurs on the tax-efficient handling of business transactions.

I also practise charity law and have extensive experience of both setting up charities for people wishing to give something back, and providing operational advice for established charities.

What Inspired You To Get Into Law?

The chance to get to know individual clients well, to understand their circumstances fully and to help solve their problems.

What Is The Most Rewarding Aspect Of Your Role?

Finding an outcome that works. That can be when the client feels that their mind has been put at rest, or when a tricky technical matter is resolved. The more technical aspects of tax law present a continual challenge, but a genuine understanding of these is both satisfying in itself and a vital starting-point for working out how to solve human problems. That’s why private client matters are so interesting – the most cost-effective solution isn’t always the most suitable for the needs of that client and their family.

What Do You Do Away From The Office?

My great interests are music, cricket and (mostly Spanish) wine. I conduct an orchestra – as far as I know, I’m the only tax professional who has conducted all nine Beethoven symphonies (some of them several times!) – and am an ever-hopeful follower of Gloucestershire’s county side. The wine I drink, and occasionally talk about when running tastings. When I’m not doing these things, I have two young daughters who keep me fully occupied.
