Stephen Charnock

Senior Associate

I specialise in leasehold enfranchisement and have over twenty years' experience in this complex area of law. I dealt with some of the very first claims when the Leasehold Reform Housing and Urban Development Act was enacted in 1993 bringing in new enfranchisement rights for leaseholders of residential flats.  I am a recognised expert and acted in a number of leading cases decided in the courts and in hundreds of cases before valuation tribunals. I joined Irwin Mitchell from Global Law Firm CMS, where I led their leasehold enfranchisement team.

I act for established landlords including Friends Life, AXA Investment Managers and Royal London Asset Management.  I also act for a wide range of tenants be they owner occupiers, investors or developers, including those on the main London Estates.

My broader experience includes long residential leases, tenants’ rights of pre-emption, tenants’ right to manage, protected, secure, tied and market tenancies and estate management.  I have advised landed London Estates including the Wellcome Trust's South Kensington Estate, the Portman Estate and the Cadogan Estate.   I am also a keen advocate for investment in the Private Rented Sector.

What is the most rewarding aspect of your role?

Every day brings a new challenge, testing my knowledge, skills and experience to provide expert advice and practical solutions for clients.

What do you do away from the office?

I am chauffeur, kit man and maths tutor to my teenage son.  Otherwise tinkering in my shed.
