Sally Simpson

I am a solicitor who has specialised in bringing medical negligence claims on behalf of patients and their families since I qualified and joined Irwin Mitchell in 2008.
Although I have a broad caseload, including most types of medical negligence claims, I have a special interest in cases involving birth injuries (such as cerebral palsy and Erb’s palsy) and paediatric injuries.

I have recently settled a claim for £1.75 million on behalf of a young lady who was born prematurely and has been blind since she was a baby following treatment for retinopathy of prematurity.

Another case of mine involving a child who sustained a severe Erb’s palsy injury after her birth was negligently managed by obstetric staff has recently settled for £650,000.
I have recently obtained an admission of liability and an apology for the husband and daughter of a lady who died following negligent bariatric surgery. We are now in the process of valuing the claim.

After a successful trial, my client, a young child who was represented by her father, received £1.1m in compensation for negligent treatment when her femoral artery became blocked during surgery, leaving her with a severely disabled leg, ankle and foot.

What Inspired You To Get Into Law?

The idea of getting justice for people who have been wronged inspired me, and still does.

What Is The Most Rewarding Aspect Of Your Role?

I enjoy winning cases and being able to make a real difference to my clients’ lives. When I initially meet clients they have usually been through a very traumatic experience, either with their own healthcare or that of a loved one, and especially if their child has been injured. It is extremely rewarding to get answers for them and obtain compensation that allows them to move on and rebuild their lives.

What Do You Like About Working At Irwin Mitchell?

I like working in a small friendly specialist team while having the support a large leading firm offers, both in terms of personal development and for the full range of services we can offer clients. For example, I often refer clients to colleagues in other departments such as Court of Protection, employment and public law.

What Do You Do Away From The Office?

I enjoy being a mum and spending time with my family and friends. I also love travelling, although trips have changed with a toddler in tow!
