Richard Jordan

I provide both technical and practical advice on tax and legal issues to the heads of a small number of ultra high net worth families and family offices. The majority of the families I look after are from outside of the UK, but I also act in a similar capacity for a small number of British families.

In each relationship the family head also expects me to identify, manage, coordinate and ultimately deliver the legal, tax and the necessary administration services required by the family from within the business.

Aside from these established client relationships, I am also retained on specific tax-driven projects to provide advice to foreign families with significant wealth looking to move to or invest in the UK. This transactional work almost always involves tax efficient structuring alongside practical and commercial considerations, risk management and issues relating to family governance and succession planning.

I travel to Switzerland and the Channel Islands frequently to meet with clients and family offices.  I also remain actively engaged with the UK tax authorities in the formulation of new legislation and previously enjoyed the pleasure of being on the STEP UK technical committee for many years.  For whatever reasons, PAM has consistently recognised me as one of the 50 most influential people operating in the UK private wealth sector.

What inspired you to get into law?

Nothing inspired me. My father was an entrepreneur in the late 80s and instead wanted me to have a steady job. At the age of 15 I was given the choice of law or medicine. I come from a family of nurses and doctors. I thought I would try the law.

What is the most rewarding aspect of your role?

Not being a lawyer. I solve problems or take problems away from clients. The law is only one factor in achieving that. I have to be practical and commercial.

What do you do away from the office?

I coach 40 children mini-rugby most Sundays at my local club. I also am a keen yachtsman, whether it is in my daughter’s 10ft dinghy, my race boat or tactician for others on a superyacht. I also enjoy endurance sports, particularly longer distance triathlons and duathlons to keep fit.
