Biography

Matthew is a commercial litigation solicitor based in the Sheffield office. He specialises in claims involving damage to infrastructure and contractual disputes in the utilities sector.

His recent experience includes advising National Grid Gas Plc on project costs reconciliation and advising on multi-million pound claims arising from burst water mains resulting in water ingress damage to gas infrastructure. He has advised regularly on the practical application of the New Roads and Street Works Act 1991 and, in particular, the compensation regime that sets out the responsibilities and potential liabilities of utility undertakers carrying out works in the street.

Matthew’s expertise also includes commercial debt recovery, handling subrogated commercial and residential property damage claims on behalf of insurance clients, and advising on disputes involving professional negligence and breach of contract. 

Matthew has had conduct of litigation in the County Court and High Court, including the Mercantile and Technology & Construction Courts, and is an advocate of Alternative Dispute Resolution having successfully resolved a number of disputes via mediation.
