Julian Chadwick

Since qualifying in 1982 I have focused on traditional private client work. Much of this concerns asset protection, as well as wealth planning to avoid inter-generational conflict. I am proud to be a trusted advisor for many clients.

In an increasingly specialised age, I have concentrated on being the contact point for families, with increasing confidence in passing work to others for specialised support: the tax and trusts teams in Chichester, the team in Newbury to deal with drafting, probate administration, the property team and the international tax team. Clients can rely on me to provide sensitive and tailored advice on wills and tax planning, generational conflict, and issues around vulnerability and old age when dealing with estates.

I also have expertise in charity law: I advise on the creation and administration of charities, and have also been heavily involved with dispute resolution for dysfunctional charities, as well as resolving conflict between charities and external bodies.

Since 1991 I have been involved with management at a senior level, and before the merger with Irwin Mitchell I was the chairman of Thomas Eggar until 2015.

What Inspired You To Get Into Law?

Hackneyed as it may sound, I genuinely enjoy the personal contact and pastoral care involved with clients. I have, in an unheroic way, a chance to make a difference to clients’ lives – be it through a well-drafted will or well-timed planning and advice.

What Is The Most Rewarding Aspect Of Your Role?

There are many things I find rewarding – not least the numerous happy and loyal clients who value the work we have done for them. I also take pride in having helped many young people across the years fulfil their potential in the law, whether through supporting colleagues or in my work as chairman of the Gamlen Charitable Trust, which promotes legal education through bursaries and scholarships.

What Do You Do Away From The Office

I like to retreat to the family home, which is in Wales. I play field sports and also enjoy spending time with friends; I am a member of the Travellers Club and am also a Knight of Justice of the Order of Malta.
