Geoffrey May

Other Legal Expert

I am a lawyer Of Counsel in the Private Client team in Gatwick. I advise high net worth individuals living, investing in UK property and other assets, working and coming to or leaving the UK on tax, residence and domicile issues, pensions and employee benefits as well as traditional private client work such as Wills and trusts.

A lot of my work has an international element, including Wills and other succession planning where assets or family members are outside of the UK and advising trustees, settlors and beneficiaries of offshore trusts on ensuring they are both UK tax-efficient and UK tax-compliant.

I devise solutions which achieve the client’s aims despite differences in tax, succession, family and other laws between the countries in each case, often with trusted advisors based in other countries.

I am heavily involved with the firm’s tax and trust law training programme, its technical committees and contributing to publicity and other material for colleagues, clients, contacts and referrers.

In my role as a member of Law Society’s Capital Taxes Sub-Committee, I contribute to numerous Government consultations on changes to tax and private client law.

What inspired you to get into law?

I studied horticulture at University as this was the family business.   After graduating in 1989 I rang a local solicitor and asked if he had a job.  A week later I started working for him, studying for my law exams part-time and qualified 6 years later.

What is the most rewarding aspect of your role?

I really enjoy the intellectual stimulation of developing strategies for clients which achieves an outcome they are happy with.  I also enjoy training junior members of staff and developing training strategies to impart my knowledge to them in an effective way.

What do you do away from the office?

I have a large garden on the Isle of Wight and looking after that as well as keeping sheep, alpacas, Muscovy ducks and chickens which occupies most of my free time.
