Douglas Houghton

I specialise in a wide range of disputes arising out of:

  • Challenges to the validity of wills
  • Claims for financial maintenance out of estates
  • Administration problems relating to estates and trusts
  • Relationship breakdowns between executors, trustees and/or beneficiaries and the removal of trustees and executors
  • The rectification and interpretation of wills and trusts.

I also have significant experience in claims involving property co-ownership disputes as well as Court of Protection matters, including contested statutory wills and deputy applications, and professional negligence surrounding wills, estates and trusts.

What Inspired You To Get Into Law?

Truth be told I never wanted to be a lawyer when I was younger, but I have always been an opinionated individual who loves to win an argument. I knew that I wanted to help people but I didn’t know how. After I studied law at university I became fascinated by the subject and inspired by the way the law protects those who are most vulnerable; I then knew that becoming a lawyer was what I was meant to do.

What Is The Most Rewarding Aspect Of Your Role?

When people come to me for advice it is often because of a family fall out following the death of a loved one.  Many people are upset and angry at what has happened and are lost as to what they should do. To me there is no greater sense of satisfaction than finding a solution to their problem and helping them move on.

What Do You Like About Working At Irwin Mitchell?

Everyone at Irwin Mitchell is incredibly passionate about what they do and work hard to achieve the very best for those they help. The firm also has a very friendly atmosphere.  It is a really enjoyable place to work.

What Do You Do Away From The Office?

I love playing and watching sport, in particular hockey. I have played for a local club for almost 20 years, over a decade of which has been in the first team, and hope to carry on playing for as long as my body will let me! I also enjoy running, playing squash and going to the gym.
