Cyber Security Expert Comments On ‘Astonishing’ Statistics

Thousands of businesses based in Leeds were hit by substantial IT hacks last year, according to a new study.

The research, by office technology specialists Altodigital, revealed almost two-thirds (62%) of Leeds-based companies fell victim to cyber-attacks in 2016, costing the local economy £57m.

Firms are leaving their confidential data at risk due to a lack of knowledge about IT systems and document management, according to the study, which aims to improve understanding of the impact security breaches have on UK business.

Of the Leeds companies surveyed, 40% have no firewall protection in place on their IT network, while 54% fail to change old passwords.

The study also revealed the primary cause of security breaches to be phishing emails, which allow hackers to access sensitive data.

Alistair Millar, marketing manager at Altodigital, said: “UK businesses still have a long way to go in terms of security in the office, especially concerning simple elements like firewalls and changing passwords.”
