The General Medical Council To Introduce Guidelines For Cosmetic Surgery Marketing For The First Time

Specialist medical negligence experts at Irwin Mitchell are supporting the General Medical Council’s (GMC) plan to introduce guidelines for cosmetic surgery marketing for the first time which could see Doctors potentially being struck off for conducting procedures marketed inappropriately. 

The new guidelines, written with the assistance of the Royal College of Surgeons, will cover the marketing and funding of cosmetic operations. 

The move follows the rise in women crowdfunding breast implants through websites such as ‘My Free Implants’ which allows women to send messages and share photos and videos of themselves in exchange for donations towards their surgery. 

The GMC told The Sunday Times: "Doctors associated with the website will be required to follow GMC standards and the new guidance when it is introduced, like all doctors carrying out cosmetic surgery."

Doctors will also be unable to provide services as a prize or use promotional tactics such as discounts or referral offers that could potentially encourage patients to make bad decisions.
