Expert abuse lawyers at Irwin Mitchell have voiced their concern after more than 70 former inmates of Kirklevington Prison in Yarm reported allegations of physical abuse to Cleveland Police.

The allegations range from the 1960s to the 1990s when the facility operated as a remand centre, with some of the allegations relating to the assault of teenagers.

Former inmates have reported physical violence, assaults and brutality from those charged with running the facility.

Specialist abuse lawyers at Irwin Mitchell, who represent a number of individuals who have reported physical and sexual abuse at Medomsley Detention Centre have expressed their concern at the latest allegations.

Emma Crowther, an expert abuse lawyer at Irwin Mitchell, said:

Expert Opinion
Allegations of physical and sexual abuse are extremely serious and it is very concerning to hear these allegations of abuse over such a long period at Kirklevington.

“Clearly the police investigation into these allegations is ongoing and it is important this investigation is thorough and has those who may have suffered abuse at the facility at its heart.

“Coming forward to talk about abuse of any nature can be extremely difficult for survivors and it is important that those who have done so are able to access the help and support they may need to deal with the long-term impact of abuse.
