Liam and Dannie Roberts Spent Their Honeymoon Suffering From Vomiting, Diarrhoea And Lethargy
Young newlyweds who were struck down with food poisoning during their honeymoon at a luxury Mexican hotel are taking legal action against tour operator Thomas Cook.
Liam and Dannie Roberts from Sharston in Manchester were enjoying a two-week break at the five-star Moon Palace Golf and Spa Resort in Cancun when they fell ill with gastric symptoms including abdominal pain, sickness and diarrhoea.
The couple, who married on 24 July 2016 instructed expert international personal injury specialists at Irwin Mitchell when their GPs back in the UK diagnosed Liam, 26, with parasitic infection Cyclospora and Dannie, 23, with Salmonella. Liam and Dannie experienced severe illness in the resort and are still suffering continuing symptoms of illness now.
Expert Opinion
“Liam and Dannie should have been having the time of their lives, but this holiday was memorable for all the wrong reasons.
"We have seen first-hand the significant effects that gastric illness can have on our clients, demonstrating how those affected often require medical treatment and a prolonged period of recovery which disrupts their lives personally and professionally.
"Salmonella and Cyclospora are very serious illnesses that can have a massive impact on the health of those affected and, in some severe cases, can prove to be fatal.
“We have recently been contacted by a number of other couples who travelled to the Moon Palace Resort in 2016 and also suffered severe gastric illness following their stay. It is worrying to hear that other holidaymakers have suffered the same problems as Dannie and Liam. We would urge anyone else who suffered problems at the hotel to get in touch as they may be able to help with our investigations.
“We would also urge Thomas Cook to take action so no one else suffers in the way Dannie and Liam did.” Jennifer Hodgson - Senior Associate Solicitor
The couple arrived at the luxury resort on 27 July 2016, and immediately noticed that Thomas Cook’s promises of luxury living were wide of the mark. The couple witnessed litter strewn around the pool, food left uncovered with insects swarming around it and meals served lukewarm.
School teacher Dannie said: “Our Honeymoon was completely ruined, this holiday was a once in a lifetime trip and we wanted it to be really special
“We had to cancel many of our planned excursions because we were so ill.
“The representative at the resort did not care when we told them that we were ill, they told us just to drink more water.
“We are really disappointed in Thomas Cook and heartbroken that we spent our Honeymoon in such a distressing way, I can’t believe this has happened to us. It certainly shouldn’t be allowed to happen to anyone else.”
