Expert medical negligence lawyers at Irwin Mitchell’s Southampton office have expressed their concerns regarding a report into the standard of care homes on the Isle of Wight after a number of residential care homes were rated as ‘inadequate’ by the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

Stonehaven Residential Home, Solent Grange Nursing Home, Down House Residential Home, Solent View Care Home, Holmdale House and The Orchard have all been rated as ‘inadequate‘ in recent months.

Healthwatch Isle of Wight, an organisation created to allow the public to have a say on care on the Isle of Wight, has recently raised its own concerns about the quality of care being provided in residential care homes and has contacted the Health and WellBeing Board and the Health and Adult Social Care Scrutiny Committee on the issue.

Now, expert lawyers at Irwin Mitchell, who represent a number of residents and their loved ones who have experienced sub-standard care at residential care home, most notably at the Orchid View care home in Sussex, have expressed their own concerns at the number of facilities that are being rated as ‘inadequate’.

Rebecca Brown, a medical negligence lawyer at Irwin Mitchell’s Southampton office, said:

Expert Opinion
“The volume of Isle of Wight care homes being graded as ‘inadequate’ by the CQC is, quite frankly, staggering. There are also a number of other care homes on the island that have been rated as ‘requiring improvement’.

“Clearly steps need to be taken by these care homes to quickly improve their standards, particularly as residents on the island are limited in their choice of care home as they do not want to relocate to the south coast.

“It is absolutely vital these issues are addressed as a matter of urgency and care provided to the elderly is improved. We have seen through our work the devastating impact sub-standard residential care can have on individuals, as well as their families, who trust their loved ones will receive the highest standard of care.

“Understandably the recent spate of ‘inadequate’ ratings on the island will cause concern among those considering using care home services and it is vital these people are reassured that every possible step is being taken to correct any care failings.”
