Woman Forced Into Career Change After Suffering Injuries In ‘Head On’ Car Crash

Irwin Mitchell Secure Settlement For Victim of Road Traffic Accident

A woman left suffering from Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS), Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and  who was forced to give up her career after she was involved in a head-on car crash whilst on holiday in Derbyshire, has received a settlement to help with her recovery.

Dettie travelled with her husband and two children to Greenhills Holiday Park, near Bakewell in Derbyshire for a two week stay in August 2008 when the accident happened whilst they were travelling to the popular tourist spot Arbor Low.

Two cars appeared to be racing along the A5270 near Chelmorton in Derbyshire and despite Dettie pulling over on the road to try and avoid a collision, one of the cars drove straight into her car.

Dettie’s daughter was taken to Buxton Hospital and was diagnosed with whiplash, however Dettie was not examined and it was only several months later that the extent of her symptoms became apparent. Dettie was later diagnosed with a frozen shoulder, PTSD and CFS.

The 46-year-old instructed specialist international personal injury lawyers at Irwin Mitchell who investigated the accident and have now secured Dettie a significant settlement to compensate her for her pain and suffering as well as her on-going medical care and loss of earnings.

Dettie used to work as a primary school teacher but due to the extent of her condition and injuries she had a lot of time off work and now has retrained as nursery school teacher which is not as physically demanding as her previous career.

Dettie, who lives in the Netherlands, said: “The accident has had a significant effect on me and my family and the fatigue and PTSD mean that I have had to give up the job I loved and trained so hard to do.

“My life outside of work is still really restricted – I need a lot of help from my family making me very dependent on them. I am not able to socialise as much as I’d like to with my friends and family – I always have to take each day as it comes depending how tired I am.

“I would like to thank my legal team at Irwin Mitchell for all their help and support over the years and helping me gain access to vital funds which will help with my ongoing recovery.”
