Industrial Disease Experts Instructed To Help In Quest For Justice
A former plumber who has been diagnosed with an asbestos-related illness is appealing to his former colleagues for help as he launches a battle for justice.Sidney Brookes in Altrincham was been diagnosed with mesothelioma, which is a cancer in the lining of the lungs caused by exposure to asbestos in July this year
The 75-year-old instructed industrial illness experts at law firm Irwin Mitchell to investigate where and when he was exposed to asbestos throughout his career so he can obtain justice for the exposure.
Specialist lawyers at Irwin Mitchell would like to hear from any of Sidney’s ex-colleagues who have worked him over the past 30 years as a plumber at various companies in Altrincham where he believes he may have come into contact with asbestos, including:
• Tommy Thorpes (1950 to 1960);
• Armstrong & Son (1960 until 1968);
• J Shuttleworths & Sons Ltd (1968 until 1976).
Sidney, father-of-two, said: “I spent a lot of my professional career maintaining and servicing boilers which required stripping the lagging to the metal, brushing down the metal with an iron brush and then re-lagging and attending the associated pipe work. The pipework and boilers were lagged with asbestos which I had no choice but to breathe in on a daily basis as I had no protective clothing.Expert Opinion
Sidney and his family have been left devastated by his diagnosis of mesothelioma and they want to seek justice for the debilitating illness he must now live with for the rest of his life.
“We know that employers have known about the risks of using asbestos for many decades. The first Asbestos regulations came into force in 1931. Sadly our work shows many did not do enough to protect workers from the harmful dust and fibres and too many people are now suffering from asbestos-related diseases decades later.
“We now hope that anyone who has any information regarding the working practices and presence of asbestos at any of these companies during the time periods listed comes forward to assist with our enquiries as it could prove vital in obtaining justice for Sidney.”

“It was a big shock to me when I was diagnosed with mesothelioma and it has left myself and my family devastated as to what the future holds for me. I hope that this appeal encourages some of my old work mates to come forward and help Irwin Mitchell with their investigation.
“As a tradesman, I was never warned about asbestos and the potential health risk it causes, so it never crossed my mind that it would be a problem all these years later. I was looking forward to a long and happy retirement after working hard all of my life.”
