Irwin Mitchell Support Disability Sport In Yorkshire Region
Irwin Mitchell has been working closely with Boccia England and West Yorkshire Sport to support disabled sports in Yorkshire and now lawyers from the firm’s Leeds office are launching a new Boccia club this month.
The Paralympic game is an accessible and fully inclusive sport which involves players rolling, throwing or kicking a ball towards a jack from a sitting position. If players are unable to throw or kick they can use an assistant and a ramp together with various aids for support.
With the growing interest and popularity in Boccia since the London 2012 Paralympic Games, a lack of provision in the City of Leeds had been identified by Boccia England and West Yorkshire Sports.
Specialist medical negligence lawyers, Samuel Hill and Lauren Bullock from the firm are heading up the new club, which will see weekly sessions held at Armley Leisure Centre running through October 2015 to March 2016.

“At Irwin Mitchell, we work extremely hard to support disabled people who want to be involved in sport and we are delighted to be able to offer full support to the new Boccia club here in Leeds, motivating and inspiring young people.
“My colleagues and I have been working together with many contacts including Boccia England and West Yorkshire Sport on our disability sports initiative.
“It is great to see the inclusive sport of Boccia being recognised and participated in and we are proud to be able to help people embrace sport and look to the future after they have suffered serious injury or disability.” Samuel Hill - Partner
Disability sport can play a key role in rehabilitation and recovery for someone who has suffered life-changing injuries. Irwin Mitchell’s latest campaign "Don't Quit, Do It", highlights the ways people can get involved and features some of the inspiring journeys their clients have made.
Irwin Mitchell announced this summer that they are sponsoring Paralympic gold medallist Hannah Cockroft MBE as she aims for Rio 2016.
This isn’t the first time Irwin Mitchell has supported Boccia groups. Associate Director, Karen Codling of the Sheffield office is chair of the Sheffield Smashers Boccia Club which has been successfully running since 2011.
Expert Opinion
“Boccia provides the perfect opportunity for people of all ages and abilities to become involved in a sport that’s enjoyed by players all over the world.
“Engaging disabled children in a sport is such a valuable part of enabling them to realise their full potential and engage with other children who also live with a disability. Boccia is also a fantastic experience for family members to meet other families who also care for a child with a disability. Clubs like this really do make a real positive difference to people’s lives.” Karen Codling - Associate Director
On 23rd and 30th September Irwin Mitchell will be running Boccia taster sessions at Armley Leisure Centre between 5 and 6pm. For more information please contact Sam Hill at Irwin Mitchell on 0113 394 6783 or email boccialeeds@irwinmitchell.com.
