Robbie Hughes, who played professional football for clubs including Oxford United, Sutton United and Croydon Athletic, was left in a coma and needed four operations in as many months following the attack during a holiday on Crete in June 2008 which left him with substantial brain damage and memory problems.
Four men were found guilty in relation to the incident in November 2012 and were sentenced to four years in jail and to pay Robbie damages. However they appealed the conviction and the hearing is due to begin on 30 September after being postponed last year.
